The earliest Hawaiian word lists
Urey Lisiansky's List
(1804)
| The Russian imperial ship Neva, commanded by Capt. Lieut. Urey Lisiansky arrived in Hawaiʻi on June 8, 1804 and left on June 20 in the company of its senior vessel, the Nadeshda, commanded by Capt. Lieut. Adam John von Krusenstern. Lisiansky was born in the Ukraine on August 2, 1773 and served in both the Russian and British navies. According to J. B. Rudnyckyj (n.d.), the English translation of the word list is an abbreviated version of the Russian original, reduced from 203 words (including a few phrases) to 172. (See Campbell's List for the Neva's visit in 1809.) adapted from Albert J. Schütz, "Voices of Eden" pp. 38. |
