Preface to the Hawaiian-English Dictionary
(1965 - 3rd edition)

Almost immediately after the publication of the first edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary in 1957, the compilers began work on the companion English-Hawaiian Dictionary, which was published in 1964. Preparation of the latter book, and work with both Ii's Fragments of Hawaiian History (1959) and Kamakau's Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii (1961) have uncovered about 500 new words and refinements of meanings of rare terms. These have been augmented by contributions from Dorothy B. Barrére, associate in Hawaiian culture, Bishop Museum, Honolulu. In addition, scientists have contributed a number of new scientific terms. All these changes and additions are either incorporated into the body of the third edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary or presented in Section A of the Supplement.

Many students of Hawaiian, especially David L. Dressel and O. Southard, have patiently studied every page of the Dictionary in search of printing errors or stylistic inconsistencies. The Proto-Polynesian and Proto-Malayo-Polynesian reconstructions following many entries in the Dictionary have been re-checked in the light of recent linguistic studies, and the results are given in Section B of the Supplement, although numerous changes have been made in the body of the book. It is recommended that serious students of Hawaiian refer to the third edition of the Dictionary, rather than to the first two editions, because of the many alterations which have been made throughout the volume.

The authors are deeply grateful to five local foundations for their financial support and to Thomas Nickerson, director of the University of Hawaii Press, who enlisted their interest in this revised and enlarged edition. Without their generosity and Mr. Nickerson's farseeing direction, it could not have appeared. The foundations are: the Juliette M. Atherton Trust, the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation, the Charles M. and Anna C. Cooke Trust, the Frear Eleemosynary Trust, and the McInerny Foundation. This edition was produced under the supervision of Robert W. Sparks, present managing editor of the Press, whose patience and forbearance are greatly appreciated.

Since long before 1957 the authors have been thankful to two other persons: Aldyth V. Morris, formerly managing editor of the University of Hawaii Press, for her wise planning and meticulous attention to every entry in both the Hawaiian-English and the English-Hawaiian dictionaries, and Jean Charlot, senior professor of art at the University, for the beauty and appropriateness of the books' design. Because of unusual talents of these two, daily use of the dictionaries, by the compilers at least, has been both utilitarianly effective and aesthetically satisfying.
