Santeliz es Pablo's List
(1791)

Three 1791 lists including Hawaiian are attributed to Santeliz es Pablo. We know little about the provenance of these lists except the signature, (Juan Eugenio Santeliz es Pablo), place (Mexico [City]), and date (16 March 1791) at the end of a three-page letter introducing the glossaries. Each list is arranged alphabetically according to the Spanish gloss, and two of them also include Nootka and "Mexican" words.

adapted from Albert J. Schütz, "Voices of Eden" p. 37.

The table below is what Schütz refers to as Santeliz es Pablo's List 2. List 1, of 70 items, including Nootka forms, is not shown, as the Hawaiian contents are fully duplicated in List 2. (The Mexican forms which were included in both lists have also been omitted.) Occasional minor differences in List 1 are shown in square brackets.

Santeliz es Pablo, Juan Eugenio. 1791. [Vocabulario Castellano Nutkeño, Sandwich, y Mexicano]. Ms. [A collection of three word lists: (1) Castellano—Nutkeño—Sandwich—Mexicano, 70 words; (2) Castellano—Sandwich—Mexicano, 216 words; (3) Castellano (this time also called Español)—Nutkeño—Sandwich—Mexicano, 312 words. Each is arranged alphabetically, according to the Spanish gloss. Peter A. Lanyon-Orgill (1979:182) referred to the Nootka list as a "defective copy" (apparently of Cook’s list) and Santeliz es Pablo as a compiler (rather than collector).]
